How to manage your horse project.

There are all kinds of ways to complete your horse project.  For example, give a public speech or team demonstration, or compete with a painting, poster, photograph, drawing, essay, poetry, scrapbook, digital story, clothes article, woodworking piece or a model horse.  Here are more ideas:

Communication: 
  • Present about parts of a horse  
  • Send a Letter to the Editor describing your opinion regarding an ethical horse situation  
  • Present a riding safety session at your county 4-H horse education day
Citizenship
  • Assist with the 4-H horse show at the county fair
  • Participate in a local horse related charitable benefit  
  • Ask friends to always wear a helmet when riding horses
  • Explore therapeutic riding and horse rescue assistance opportunities 
Leadership

  • Lead a trail ride for your fellow 4-H horse project members
  • Work with a horseless horse member to care for a horse
  • Conduct a show horse grooming clinic
  • Organize a tack swap for 4-H members

Horsemanship Standards Monthly Learning Lessons

Level 1: Giddy Up & Go covers discovering horses, appearance, conformation, breeds, behavior, safety, gaits, and horse uses.
Level 2: Head, Heart & Hooves covers anatomy, nutrition, feeding, dentistry, hoof care, grooming, pre-purchase exam, and judging.
Level 3: Stable Relationships covers reproduction, health care, housing, facilities, management, transportation, and ownership costs.
Level 4: Riding the Range covers riding and horsemanship skills, tack, basic safety and handling skills, training, and equitation.
Level 5: Jumping to New Heights covers showing, patterns, showmanship, fitting, ethics, and sportsmanship.
